What is a Child Trust Fund?

The Child Trust Fund scheme has been set up by the Government to help give children in the UK a financial head start. Individual Child Trust Fund accounts are simple saving and investment plans. Your child will receive a voucher for £250 when you first start claiming Child Benefit to help kick start their account. If you, your family and friends pay into this account, by the time your child reaches 18, they could have a large enough tax-free lump sum to help them live the life they want to live.

  • How does a Child Trust Fund work?

It's really simple! Every child born after 1st September 2002 receives a voucher for £250 from the Government. If your family is on full Child Tax Credit your child will also receive a further £250. The voucher must be used to open a Child Trust Fund.

That's not all – the Government will make a further contribution to your child's Child Trust Fund round about their 7th birthday. And they are thinking of making another contribution to children's accounts when they become teenagers.

  • Can my friends and family help out too?

Any number of friends and family can contribute to your child's ASDA Child Trust Fund provided by The Children's Mutual, up to a combined limit of £1,200 a year (not including the Government contributions). They can choose to set up a Direct Debit or make one-off payments whenever they like. The minimum
    payment is £10.

  • Are there any hidden charges?

No. There is just a simple, fixed yearly administration charge of 1.5% of the value of the account.

  • When does my child get their money?

When your child reaches 18 years old, they will have full access to their money. They can use this to help with anything - their education, a first car, or maybe to travel the world. Don't forget that inflation is likely to reduce what your child could buy in the future with however much they receive.
